This month we would like to introduce Lucy and David Nicholas, the founders of Trelawne Equine in Devon, United Kingdom.
We are passionate about helping people make the transition from shod to bare as painless as possible!
How did we get to that point?
Well, our barefoot journey began around 2004, when my [Lucy’s] former show jumper started to develop a short stride. I felt that something was not right. After a lot of investigation, and luckily having a very forward-thinking vet and farrier at the time, we decided to try him barefoot.
This felt like quite a leap of faith. Even the professionals were open about the fact that their knowledge was very limited in this area. I knew that I would have to do a lot of research if we were going to succeed with this transition. To say I was sceptical was an understatement, but like a lot of people who adopt the barefoot way of life, I was desperate to find something that would help my horse.
We embraced the idea, and I researched it as much as I could. The more I read, the more I realised the benefits of keeping horses without shoes. The logical step from there was to remove the shoes on our other horse, too. I wanted to do what I could to prevent any future problems.
At this point, we had run a tack shop in Kent for over ten years. In 2006 we decided to move down to Devon. This move meant that I no longer had my barefoot-friendly farrier and vet to help me with my horses. They taught me how to trim to ensure I could continue with the progress we had made with my horses’ hooves.
My research had also prompted me to seek something that would help my horses through the transition phase (and beyond). This search led me to EasyCare. EasyCare’s Old Mac’s G2 with comfort pads were perfect for what I needed.
I was so impressed by the boots that we immediately started to stock them and recommend them to our customers. Word spread quickly, and soon we were getting people from all over the UK (and beyond!) coming to us for advice about hoof boots. When the opportunity arose to wholesale the EasyCare product line in 2010, we jumped at it and Trelawne Equine was born!
