I’ve been riding endurance for only a few years and really like keeping my horse barefoot. So I use boots on my horses, especially in rocky conditions.
This past 4th of July weekend my horse and I, Maya, went to the Shamrock ride, west of Wheatland, WY. It’s always been a fun ride and we expected more of the same. Unfortunately, Wyoming has recieved more moisture this year than we’ve had in 30 years. The road in was horrible, rough, washed out, muddy…just a nightmare. So we knew the trail we were riding wasn’t going to be much better. On Friday, I booted Maya’s front feet up in her EasyBoot Bares and we rode the the 30 mile LD.
We went thru everything we expected: mud, bogs, quick-running streams, wet footing where there had never been any before. And where it wasn’t muddy, the granite in the area made for rough, rocky and gravely trails. So we went from one extreme to the other. Friday was sunny, hot and beautiful. The boots were great.
We took Saturday off to rest and were planning to ride another 30 mile LD on Sunday. I wake up on Sunday to the sound of rain hitting the roof of the horse trailer. I looked outside and it was pouring. I almost decided not to ride, but bucked up and got ready to go. We got her EasyBoots on, saddled up and off we went. It rained, it misted, the footing was not good, lots of water, mud, soggy bogs…just bad. And her boots stayed on thru all we slogged thru. The only problem we had was a couple of rubs from the wet gaiters. At the vet check, we rubbed on some Desitin and kept moving. By the time we were finished, it was raining, hailing, lightening…generally a miserable time! But the boots, which by the way have about 200 miles on them, hung in there. Never lost one! Even though we went thru some spots that the mud was up to her knees, they never came loose, never twisted. I must say I was very impressed.
So that is our Shamrock story. I need to replace the gaiters, but the boots themselves are still hanging in there and I’m sure I can get a few more hundred competition miles out of them.
