We’re excited to announce that we now offer EasyShoe Impression Material! Available in Soft and Medium densities, EasyShoe Impression Material is a great option for horses looking for additional support.

What is Impression Material?

Impression Material is commonly referred to as DIM (Dental Impression Material). It is a putty material that is similar to the frog density.

How does it work?

EasyShoe Impression Material comes in 2 parts, Part A and Part B. Take the 2 parts in equal amounts and mix them together until the color is completely blended. Then you are ready to use. EasyShoe Impression Material comes in 2 densities: Soft (Blue, 15A) and Medium (Pink, 25A).

Step 1: Mix the two parts together until the color is completely blended. Make sure to mix equal parts.

Step 2: Apply a thrush preventative, such as Artimud. Be sure to get the hoof clay in the grooves. You can also mix Copper Sulfate with your DIM to prevent bacteria growth.

Step 3: Apply DIM to the sole as needed. The amount of DIM you apply will vary depending on the horse’s specific needs.

Step 4: Slide the shoe on the hoof. Put the hoof down and let the horse go weight bearing to squeeze out any excess DIM.

Step 5: Remove excess DIM.

Now you are ready to glue!

What situations would I utilize DIM?

DIM should be used when you want to add support to the bottom of the foot between the sole and the shoe. While barefoot, a foot will get dirt packed in the sole and around the frog adding support to the bony column. DIM will provide that support while having a shoe glued or nailed to it. It can also be used in the case of a horse having a tender sole. DIM will provide even support to protect the tender sole.

How do I know if my horse needs DIM?

The use of DIM should be recommended by your veterinarian or hoof care provider. There are many instances when a horse may benefit from the use of DIM. If the sole is tender, or if they need support to the bony column, DIM can help provide support. For instance, if the heels are underrun or crushed, the horse would possibly benefit from the use of DIM.

Do I use DIM all over the hoof?

DIM can be used to cover the entire foot, or just the back half of the foot around the frog, filling the commissures. The condition of the hoof will be the determining factor as to just where the DIM should be placed.

How much DIM do I need to use?

Typically, enough DIM is used to fill in the concavity of the hoof, level to the ground. It is a good idea to use some sort of anti-microbial treatment to prevent bacteria growth, such as Artimud or Copper Sulfate mixed in the DIM. These will help create a healthier environment between the sole and DIM. Moisture can and will get trapped in this area, thus benefiting from the anti-microbial treatment.

If your horse needs a little extra cushion and support, DIM might be a good option for you. Have a question you don’t see here? Contact us!
