As spring rolls in, so do frequent rain showers. Consistently wet, muddy conditions create the perfect environment for bacteria and fungi to thrive, making horses especially susceptible to thrush.

Thrush is a common hoof condition that affects the frog and surrounding tissues, often showing up as a black, foul-smelling discharge. Left untreated, it can lead to discomfort, lameness, and more serious hoof issues. The good news? With a proactive approach and the right products, thrush is highly preventable even during the wettest months.

EasyCare-Recommended Solutions for Thrush Prevention

Here are a few products that we recommend for thrush prevention and treatment that pair well with EasyShoes and Easyboots.

1. Artimud – Preventative Protection Under EasyShoes

Artimud is a microbial hoof putty designed to pack into the collateral grooves and frog area. When applied before putting on EasyShoes, it creates a protective barrier that helps prevent bacteria from taking hold. It’s especially useful for horses in consistently wet environments or those prone to thrush.

You can also layer Artimud with DIM (Dental Impression Material).

2. Copper Sulfate + DIM – Layered Sole Protection

For another level of defense, apply Copper Sulfate Powder directly to the sole before shoeing. Copper sulfate is well-known for its antimicrobial properties and helps inhibit the growth of thrush-causing bacteria.

After applying the powder to, layer DIM (Dental Impression Material) over the top to seal it in place. This creates a protective, supportive barrier that keeps the copper sulfate in contact with the hoof while helping block out moisture and debris.

3. Copper Sulfate Pour-In Pad – Built-In Defense

For horses wearing EasyShoes, a Copper Sulfate Pour-In Pad offers another layer of protection. This pad is applied beneath the shoe and infused with copper sulfate, a well-known antimicrobial agent. It not only supports the hoof structurally but also actively works to inhibit the growth of thrush-causing bacteria.

You can add the pour-in pad after the shoe is applied from the back of the shoe at the heel, or for full coverage bottoms, drill 2 or 3 holes in the bottom to insert the mixing tip and inject the pour-in pad.

4. CLEAN-IT Hoof Soak – Ideal for Barefoot Horses

Barefoot horses benefit from routine soaking to keep hooves clean and balanced. CLEAN-IT is a powerful hoof soak solution that targets thrush and bacterial infections. It penetrates deep into the hoof to clean and treat affected areas effectively.

For best results, pair CLEAN-IT with the Easyboot Remedy, which makes soaking simple and mess-free. This combination allows for extended contact time, helping the solution do its job while keeping your horse comfortable.
