About the Ride
There is something about the Goethe Challenge rides that attract the attention of world ranked endurance riders. Perhaps it is because you can ride any distance, from a 25-mile event to a 100-mile event in December. Or perhaps it is because the trails through the forest in Levy County, Florida, are some of the most ecologically diverse in the region. 110 riders participated in the various distances last year, with an astounding 33 riders in the 100-mile event. Ride times varied from just over eight hours for the winning time to 11 1/2 hours for the tail-enders.

The Goethe Challenge rides have been in existence for more than ten years and profits are dedicated to perpetuate the shared use trail systems throughout the park. The trails are mostly sandy and grassy with some gravel, so hoof protection is recommended. Base Camp is located at the Black Prong Equestrian Center and a pre-ride meal, included in the entry, takes place on Friday at 6 PM. All vet checks are in camp.

About the Region
Nearly 20% of the county is set aside for state and national wildlife areas. The region is filled with preserves, parks, more than 200 natural freshwater springs and countless wildlife refuges.

Located near the Gulf of Mexico in southeastern Levy County, the land in Goethe Forest was purchased in 1992 from J.T. Goethe through Florida’s Conservation and Recreation Lands Program. The forest has more than 15 different natural commuities including dome swamp, scrubby flatwoods, basin swamp and sandhill. Goethe State Forest may contain the largest tract of contiguous old-growth longleaf pine flatwoods in Florida.
